Why do latex gloves turn yellow?
Aug. 14, 2024

Gloves have become an important line of defense guarding workers in all walks of life. However, users who are accustomed to using latex gloves find that the gloves sometimes turn yellow.Discoloration of latex gloves during use is relatively common. However, discoloration of unused latex gloves is likely to affect the performance of the gloves.

There are many factors affecting the discoloration of latex gloves, so let's explore together!

1. Contact with sweat, saliva or metal

The main component of latex gloves is natural latex. The natural properties of this material make it easy for gloves to yellow and discolor once they come into contact with sweat, saliva and metal. The principle behind this phenomenon is that contact of the latex material with acids and copper ions causes the latex to yellow.

These exposures are prevalent in most use cases and are mostly localized discoloration of the contact area. However, the discoloration of latex gloves caused by this condition has very little effect on glove performance.

2. Light and heat effects

Direct exposure to UV rays or exposure of gloves to sunlight accelerates the oxidation process of latex, leading to yellowing of gloves. In addition, high temperatures can accelerate the degradation process of latex and lead to glove discoloration.

These causes not only lead to discoloration, but also harden and damage the gloves. In other words, latex gloves are not suitable for use in the hot sun and high temperatures.

3. Chlorination

In order to make gloves easy to wear, manufacturers use chlorine washing process in the production of latex gloves. This process inevitably leads to chlorine residue. When the gloves are used, the residual chlorine ions cause corrosion and metal ionization, which can damage electronic products. These damaged metal layers may "stain" the gloves, causing them to yellow and discolor locally.

4. Product aging

Latex materials age naturally over time, which can also lead to yellowing of gloves.

Tips to prevent yellowing of latex gloves:

1. Store gloves correctly

It is recommended that latex gloves be stored in a cool, dry environment. Gloves should be stored away from heat, sunlight, moisture and dust, etc. It is better to use opaque packaging materials.

2. Standardize the use of gloves

Wash your hands with soap and dry them thoroughly before wearing gloves, and avoid touching any surfaces. Gloves that have been used for a long time or are discolored should be replaced in a timely manner to ensure safe and hygienic use.

3. Improvement of process

When using the chlorine washing process, manufacturers can control chlorine residues by controlling the chlorine concentration, neutralizing the process and rinsing the gloves well. This method can effectively reduce the impact of chlorine residue on gloves.

Through the above measures, the yellowing of latex gloves can be effectively reduced and their service life can be extended. In the selection and use of latex gloves, full consideration should be given to its material properties and the use of the environment to ensure the functionality and safety of the gloves.
